Trying something new

Partridge is a common prey and the most likely target, should you hear gun shots on the mountain. For smaller birds trapping, using lime sticks, or fine nets is common practice. Here it is seen as a sport, but importantly the product ends up on the table, a nutritious and tasty plate offering seasonal variety to the diet.
Anyone who follows Jamie Oliver will know that seasonal organic & locally sourced, is the ‘in thing’ ;-) Here it’s just normal.
Partridge, Quail and Lark, are all local delicacies, and about during the winter months.
Last night on the table, a plate of little birds. Each no more than an inch long, eaten whole, bones and all, I think to myself, hum guess it’s a good source of protein and calcium, these people look healthy enough. – I did not catch the name; the very good wine and entertaining conversation had something to do with that.
The birds were, something I not had, eaten before, although I knew that trapping goes on, but what are the little creatures called in English?
Greek friends tried to help with translation “little, small, birds”
I didn’t have my camera with me, so this picture here, not perfect was taken with my cheap Nokia phone.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

In spite of the EU's attempts to curb this practice, using birdlime to capture in particular the much prized Song Thrush is still tolerated in this region.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't say if you enjoyed your meal!! I can't manage anything as small as that normally.
ReplyDeleteThey look like babt budgies, Lisa - was there a mirror and a bell lying about?
ReplyDeleteIts good to see comments, now I know people actually read this..
ReplyDeleteNo mirror or bell, but I would rather a bird on the plate than in a cage! :-)
I tucked in to the spinage pie! and enjoyed my meal. Like marmite, save the delicacy for those how really enjoy it. Hands off it's all mine..
EU and law? well so many times the law is an ass! If you were hungry would you eat.
