Which direction does the tyre tread go?

I just noticed the rotation arrows on my bike’s tyres,  if you need to find it, it's written on the side of the tyre some where near the pressure instructions, of course the one that was on the wrong way round was the rear wheel - so I couldn't just put it on the other way round because the casset has to fit onto the gear chain!

So this evening, the back wheel has come off, the air pressure let out and the tyre and tube take off and put back on the wheel the with the tyre the right way. Call me a perfectionist,  I really doubt that it would make that much difference, the wheels always go around the same way!

  1. I don't think it makes much difference with most tyres. Some off road tyres you fit opposite ways depending on whether it's a front or rear tyre.

  2. Toby's right. Often MTB tyres go opposite ways front & rear: front to minimise rolling resistance, rear to maximise pedal power transfer.

  3. You may need to go 200kph to notice a difference http://www.schwalbetires.com/tech_info/tire_tread

  4. Thanks for all your advice - I don't go fast enough to make a difference, but the bike looks good, having them the correct way round. Just call me vain.
